The death toll from a chemical factory blast in Xiangshui County, east China's Jiangsu Province has risen to 44, according to local authorities Friday morning.
A total of 88 others have been rescued so far. The fire at the scene has been contained after hundreds of firefighters worked overnight to put out the flames.
Hospitals are working tirelessly to treat those injured in the explosion, which occurred at around 14:48 following a fire that broke out in a pesticide-producing factory located in a chemical industrial park in Xiangshui.
Medical personnel and ambulances from many hospitals in the province were dispatched immediately after the blast. The Yancheng City No.1 People's Hospital began receiving injured as early as 15:00 on Thursday.
